I MET SOMEONE

Sunday morning came too quick for me. I woke up and fixed a quick breakfast of moi- moi and chicken, of course I bought it the previous day. I didn't go to church because I knew I was still battling to resume going to church and I had a trip to make to Lafia.

I got to the park by 1pm and just as I was about entering the car, I heard a voice from the car say to me "what is a fine girl like you doing in Lafia?" I turned and looked up, and behold it was a lady's voice and she had a warm smile. I answered and asked her what a beautiful girl like her is doing at Lafia too. We both laughed at out loud at our predicaments. I told her that I worked in Lafia and she said her family is there and she has lived all her life there.

Hence, a beautiful conversation enveloped and I learnt she was schooling at the polytechnic in Nasarawa Toto ( You have to pronounce the Toto subtly) and was just returning from her Uncle's place in Abuja whom she has not seen in a long time.

From our conversation, I deduced that she was naive, young and vibrant waiting and wanting to explore life. I could relate because I was once like her, energetic and adventurous. I have always dreamed of living a life of my own, away from my parents and siblings to discover the real essence of my existence while breaking new grounds for myself. I knew I was older than her with at least 5years.

I loved her confidence, so I asked for her number and promised to take her to the movies when next she comes to Abuja. In her, I saw a girl I could mentor and be a friend to.

She told me a very bizarre story about the crisis that rocked Lafia in 2014 and how she watched one of her neighbours behead a Fulani herdsman. She said that day started like every other day and she was helping a neighbour pick melon (egwusi) when people started running helter skelter like they were being chased by their ancestors and not knowing in what direction to go to. She gathered her siblings who were playing and ran to their house and was watching the whole event when her neighbour beheaded a man. She tried to escape with her little siblings and their house was at verged of being burnt. Finally, they were able to escape to a neighboring town to an aunt's place.

She said the memory still haunts her till date. After the story, we both enjoyed the silence that followed for the rest of the journey. I was just relieving and relishing on what I just heard. My mind was very picturesque with some gory details.

I finally got to my destination and bade her farewell.

FRIDAY

It's Friday, alcohol and public places are excited including the private places. Everybody is waiting for the day to end to enable them to live out the Friday. I went to this lounge with a friend of mine who promised to take me out. I sat down sipping my drink and observing everybody.  The table beside me had people who looked like they were having a village meeting and one of the men amongst them came with his wife, the type of wife who's always stronger than the husband, the type who insist to go everywhere with their husband to make sure he doesn't look at the small girls like they call them. You can tell she's used to it because she was dancing to the music and having her fun while eating everything on the menu.  The other table had people who genuinely came out to have fun. You can see them laughing and dancing to every beat the DJ played, one can see the youthful exuberance.  Another table had guys who look like they've lost business deals, love, and family. ...

BEING A GIRL

As a little girl, I knew and understood what gender inequality was even when no one explained it to me. I was always whisked away into the kitchen to learn how to cook, not because it was a necessary life hack or skill to survive, but because I will become a woman that will get married someday and will be expected to cater to my husband and children. It made me hate cooking because my brothers were left to play all the time. I was flogged and punished if I don’t get to stay in the kitchen and learn from my mother. It took me moving out of my family house and living alone to like and enjoy cooking. It became clear to me that I was being kind to myself and taking care of my health by taking out time to cook the things I loved. I also remembered how I got beaten and was stopped from playing football because I sustained an injury on my leg. I was told that I was a girl and didn’t need injuries on my leg because it would spoil my leg and make me unattractive. I wasn’t also...

MY TAXI SERIES #1

It was a Monday morning, I got to where I take taxi to work. After standing for 15 minutes, I finally got one. A lady entered with a guy, she was sitting beside me while her friend i presume sat in front.. Just as the vehicle started moving the lady beside me dressed in the popular wizkid's ankara wear with a brown and oxblood braids and socks and slippers told the guy in front that he didn't give her any transport money. The guy quickly asked for her purse and she indulged him and i could tell she was uneasy because she started to tease the guy by asking him what he was looking for in her purse and if he's aware that is ungentlemanly for a man to search a lady's purse. The guy got to his destination, gave the lady her purse and dropped off. Immediately, she unzipped her purse to count the money and it was N1,500 she sighed and brought out her phone and started placing calls. She called the first man demanding for money and i guess that one promised her somethi...
